Frequently Asked Questions
What is FLARE?
FLARE (Fire and Landscape Analytics for Risk Estimation) is a real-time wildfire intelligence platform that delivers 250–450 m wildfire intelligence at a 5-minute refresh rate using a proprietary AI model applied to geostationary satellite data.
What does FLARE stand for?
FLARE stands for Fire and Landscape Analytics for Risk Estimation.
How does FLARE detect wildfires in near real time?
FLARE continuously analyzes thermal and radiance data from geostationary satellites and uses a proprietary AI model to generate higher-resolution wildfire intelligence. This allows users to monitor thermal anomalies and evolving fire conditions with frequent updates.
What satellites does FLARE use?
FLARE uses GOES geostationary satellite data as its primary continuous monitoring source and incorporates VIIRS fire detection data from NASA as a reference layer for wildfire monitoring and validation.
How is FLARE different from NASA FIRMS or VIIRS fire detection?
NASA FIRMS and VIIRS provide extremely valuable wildfire detection products, but polar-orbiting satellites revisit locations only periodically. FLARE focuses on the operational gap between these passes by using a proprietary AI model to enhance continuously observing geostationary satellite data and provide more frequent wildfire intelligence updates.
Who is FLARE designed for?
FLARE is designed for electric utilities, insurance and reinsurance companies, energy infrastructure operators, emergency managers, and government agencies that need timely wildfire intelligence to support risk awareness and operational decision-making.
What problems does FLARE help solve?
FLARE helps organizations monitor wildfire risk conditions, identify emerging thermal anomalies, improve situational awareness, and support earlier mitigation decisions related to infrastructure risk and wildfire exposure.
Is FLARE a satellite company?
No. FLARE does not build satellites. It uses existing Earth observation satellite data and a proprietary AI model to produce operational wildfire intelligence.
What climate risks will FLARE expand to beyond wildfire?
FLARE is designed as the first product in a broader climate intelligence platform. Future capabilities are intended to expand into heat monitoring, flood risk intelligence, and other compound climate hazards using the same satellite data infrastructure and proprietary AI model.
Is there a demo of FLARE?
Yes. FLARE can be explored through a short video walkthrough and an interactive product demo available directly from the website.
Who founded FLARE?
FLARE was founded by Manju Smriti, Founder and CEO of BRIDGE Research and Policy Foundation. Manju holds an MPA from the Brooks School of Public Policy at Cornell University and has experience in policy research and climate risk analysis.
How often is FLARE updated?
FLARE processes new satellite observations approximately every 5 minutes, depending on data availability and processing latency. The Live Map also includes a timeline controller that allows you to view historical data from the past 72 hours.
What is Fire Radiative Power (FRP)?
Fire Radiative Power (FRP) is a measure of the rate of radiant heat output from a fire, typically measured in megawatts (MW). Higher FRP values indicate more intense fire activity.
How are risk levels calculated?
Risk levels are calculated using a combination of factors including hotspot density, FRP intensity, brightness temperature, trend analysis, and proximity to the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI).
Can I export data for analysis?
Yes, you can export data in multiple formats including GeoJSON, CSV, and NetCDF. Use the 'Copy JSON' feature in the map tooltips for quick data extraction.
What does the What-If Simulator model?
The What-If Simulator allows you to model the projected impact of fuel treatment interventions, WUI buffer zones, and vegetation management on fire risk. Results are based on statistical models and should be considered estimates.
Is this data suitable for operational dispatch?
No. This is demo data with inherent uncertainty. FLARE is designed for planning and analysis purposes. For operational dispatch decisions, please consult official fire agencies and verified data sources.
